2 killed, including teen, in Elkhart shooting
ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) – The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating after two people, including a 15-year-old boy, were killed in a shooting Sunday night in Elkhart.
Officers were called just before 11 p.m. to the 700 block of Concord Avenue. When they arrived, they found a 15-year-old boy suffering from apparent gunshot wounds outside of a home. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
While officers were at the scene, they learned that a 34-year-old man, identified as Alexis Jackson of Elkhart, was taken to the hospital with apparent gunshot wounds. He also died at the hospital.
A next-door neighbor to where the 15 year old was found said three gunshots awoke her on Sunday night.
“I jumped up when I heard that three shots and grabbed my gun. Yes, I’m legal,” said the neighbor who asked to be anonymous. “I didn’t know what was going on. Because there’s been shots over there for weeks now.”
The neighbor has lived in her home her entire life and remarked her block is overall quiet. She grew tearful after lamenting her knowing the family of the teen victim but also that other people in the neighborhood could have been hurt as well.
“Something’s gotta give. Something’s got to give. This needs to stop,” she said.
Sandy Shurn lives a block over and awoke early Monday morning to find police lights flashing around her neighborhood. Shurn reports hearing gunshots “at least once a week.”
“But most of the time it sounds like it’s late at night, and it sounds like they’re shooting in the air,” said Shurn.
She said she won’t sit outside in the summer.
“I feel safe in my house. But it’s the things that’s going on around,” Shurn said.
