SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - In a neighborhood where residents say daily gunfire has become their new normal, lies police tape stretching across the 1000 block of North Brookfield Street in South Bend.

Police say officers responding to a ShotsSpotter activation around 2:15 a.m. Thursday morning, found 24-year-old resident Taveyone Colon lying in a yard with gunshot wounds.

A short time later, though, Colon was pronounced dead on the scene, one that turned emotional quickly.

Residents visibly were in tears. Others were angry and yelling at police after detectives were seen collecting what looked to be evidence found at a nearby memorial of another young man, a 16-year-old, that was shot and killed on the very same block back in October.

A neighbor tells 16 News Now a barrage of bullets this morning also reached a 2-year-old’s bedroom window, and ultimately lead police to draw their guns on scene hours later.

It’s a sight retired police officer Lynn Coleman says he become too familiar.

“Nothing can be so bad to the point where we are willing to take somebody’s life for it. It really can’t be, it shouldn’t be that deep, that serious,” Coleman says.

But it was, at least for the person who took Colon’s life without any regard for his family, or for the people in the neighborhood who will continue to be impacted by ongoing gun violence.

“There’s people that live in and around, a total community that is affected by it from top-to-bottom, from bottom-to-top, and everybody in between. At some point it has to stop,” Coleman says.

An autopsy has been scheduled Friday morning in Kalamazoo.

As for the investigation, no suspects have been named or arrested in this case. Anyone with information is asked to call County Metro Homicide at 574-235-5009.
