ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) - This upcoming weekend is huge for high school baseball in the Hoosier State as regionals begin.

One player who was huge for the Elkhart Lions in their first sectional title win was senior catcher Vinny Ambrose.

“Vinny’s played a huge role this season behind the plate,” Elkhart senior pitcher Drew Pressler said. “He’s been hosing guys down with the arm. He’s hitting well. He heated up about midseason for us and became a big factor in our lineup. He’s just overall a big factor in our team.”

The senior didn’t just get it done at the plate for the Lions. He also has a hose behind the dish as he set the tone throwing out two Penn Kingsmen in the first inning of the sectional semifinals.

“Obviously, any time you have a catcher that has an arm like that tt makes other teams really hesitant to run,” Elkhart baseball head coach Scott Rost said. “When you can shut down another team’s running game and you can give your pitchers a little bit of confidence and not being so quick to the plate, I think that makes a huge difference. So obviously a huge asset to us when he’s behind the plate.”

Ambrose’s mentality has allowed him to showcase his versatility.

“Just take everything I can,” Ambrose said. “Be an animal. Got to go after it. Gotta be confident. It’s baseball so a lot of things don’t go your way. You have to get up there next at bat. If you make an error, just make the next play.”

Ambrose will look to lead Elkhart to its first regional title this weekend as the Lions square up with Adams in the regional semis.

First pitch should be around 1:30 PM ET at LaPorte High School.
