MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WNDU) - New information was released today about a stabbing incident inside the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City Sunday that left one corrections officer dead, and another hospitalized.

57-year old Lt. Eugene Lasco was fatally injured after he rushed to help 22-year old officer Padrick Schmitt who was being stabbed by an inmate.

The incident occurred about 2:40 p.m. Sunday afternoon in what was described as a common area of the prison.

The inmate responsible for the attack is alleged to be 38-year-old Tymetri Campbell who pleaded guilty to three murders out of Marion County and was sentenced to 130 years in January of 2004,

“Yes, this is absolutely a horrible, horrible, sad day for all of us at the Statehouse, everybody in law enforcement, and really everybody in the community,” said Indiana Senator Mike Bohacek, (R) Michiana Shores. “There are folks that work at DOC that people often forget about the important and exceedingly dangerous job that they do.”

The Indiana Department of Correction extended thoughts and prayers to its staff and their families in a Facebook post.

The post drew more than 250 comments including one that read: “The IDOC should see this as an eye opener. Understaffing is plaguing the department of corrections.”

A self-described fellow corrections officer wrote: “You should allow us to have our own stab-vests and wear then every day at work. I have my own and can’t bring it in, I think it’s ridiculous!!”

Matt Anderson says he worked in the prison with Lt. Lasco for about two years. “This is something that we all knew could happen. There have been several close calls before.”

Anderson set up a petition drive on change.org that calls for the death penalty to be sought for Lasco’s murder.

“I just want something more than just another murder charge,” Anderson explained. I’ve seen the incarcerated attack the staff at that prison before and little is actually done for their punishment. Yes, they’re charged again but a lot of these guys are doing life sentences.”

A GoFundMe has also been set up for Lasco’s family to help cover funeral and memorial costs.
